| The National Research Institute of Cultural
Heritage conducts academic studies on cultural properties,
collects primary data for historical verification, and
conducts research and development on scientific conservation technologies.
The institute also does research on effective maintenance
methods and advanced methods of preservatory care for
the cultural properties from the ancient Baekje, Silla
and Gaya Kingdoms. It has three Regional Research Institutes
of Cultural Properties, one each in Gyeongju, Buyeo, and
Changwon |

General Affairs Division |

| The General Services Division is responsible
for personnel affairs, official documents, budget and
accounting, maintenance of Research Institute of Cultural
Properties. |
Archaeological Studies |
 |
| The Department of Archaeologic Studies conducts
site survey and excavation of cultural sites. The department
has been making a 10-year academic research of the Demilitarized
Zone since 1991 in preparation for the reunification of
Korea. It is responsible for supporting the regional offices
of the Research Institute of Cultural Properties, survey
of overseas immobile Korean cultural properties, holding
of international academic conferences and exhibitions
of photographs of cultural properties. |
Art & Architecture Division |
 |
| The Department of Artefacts and Relics conducts
research of works of fine arts and handicraft and architectural
cultural properties and survey of cultural properties
in North Korea and Korean cultural properties abroad.
It makes precision measurement and safety diagnosis of
old wooden and stone buildings. The department uses computers
to make design drawings for a architectural restoration. |
Folkloric Studies Division |

| The Department of Folkloric Studies makes
research of folkloric beliefs, customs and life including
traditional skills, arts, rites of passage, clothing,
food, seasonal customs, plays, oral tradition, etc, It
studies of folkloric culture in terms of historical changes,
regional and class characteristics and differences and
manner of inheritance. |
Conservation Science Division |
 |
| The Department of Conservation Science makes
use of scientific equipment to conduct basic research
of material, structure, composition, date and conservation
surrounding of cultural properties. It is engaged in developing
repair and restoration methods using both traditional
and modern conservation techniques. |

| The regional Office excavates major cultural
sites in Gyeongsangbuk-do Province and Gyeongju and gives
emergency conservation treatment to unearthed relics.
Management of the excavated objects is also its responsibility.

| The Korean National University of Cultural
Heritage opened in March 2000 as a 4-year college to produce
professionals with specialized knowledge for the transmission
and advance of traditional culture. By 2002, it has Cultural
Properties Management Department and Traditional Landscaping Department,
Traditional Architecture Department, Traditional Fine Arts Department,
Science of Cultural Preservation Department and Cultural Artifacts Department.
Traditional Culture Training Center will be established in affiliation
to the university to provide training for professionals working for
the preservation of traditional culture. |

Gyeongbokgung Palace was built in 1395(the
fourth year of King Taejo, the founder of the Joseon Dynasty)
as a royal seat of power. Burnt down during the Japanese
invasion on 1592, it was rebuilt in 1867(the fourth year
of King Gojong).
As present , the courts of Heungnye-mun Gate, the East
Palace, and Taewon-jeon Hall are under full restoration. |
