HISTORY
CHA started out as the Former Royal Household Affair Office. It carried out its activities of managing cultural heritage as an agency successively under the aegis of the Ministry of Culture and Information, Ministry of Culture, Ministry of Culture and Sports and the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, until 1998. On May 2, 1999, it was granted the status of an independent government agency of rank 1, and later in March 2004, the status of an agency of a sub-ministerial rank.

Nov. 1945 Creation of the Former Royal Household Affair Office by the US Military Government to oversee duties related to the management of cultural heritage.
Jun. 1955 Reorganized into the Former Royal Household Properties Office.
Oct. 1961 Reorganized into the Cultural Properties Administration and placed under the aegis of the Ministry of Education.
Jul. 1968 Transferred under the aegis of the Ministry of Culture and Information.
Apr. 1975 National Research Institute of Cultural Heritage and National Folk Museum of Korea established.
Dec. 1989 Placed under the aegis of the Ministry of Culture.
Jan. 1990 Gyeongju Research Institute of Cultural Heritage, Buyeo Research Institute of Cultural Heritage, Changwon Research Institute of Cultural Heritage and Mokpo Maritime Relics Conservation Science Office established.
Oct. 1992 Royal Museum opened.
Mar. 1993 Transferred under the aegis of the Ministry of Culture and Sports.
May. 1994 Mokpo Maritime Relics Office reorganized into the National Museum of Maritime Relics.
Feb. 1998 Placed under the aegis of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism.
May. 1999 Re-established as an independent agency as part of a government organization reform (rank-1 government agency).
Mar. 2000 Korean National University of Cultural Heritage opened.
Mar. 2004 Awarded the status of a sub-ministerial agency following a new amendment to the Government Organization Act.
Aug. 2005 Royal Museum reorganized into the National Palace Museum of Korea, Naju Research Institute of Cultural Heritage established.
Nov. 2007 Jungwon Research Institute of Cultural Heritage established.
Apr. 2009 - National Museum of Maritime Relics re-organized into the National Research Institute of Maritime Cultural Heritage
- Reorganization of Government Branch of Historic Site Bureau and Cultural Heritage Bureau into Heritage Conservation Bureau and Heritage Promotion Bureau
- Establishment of Cultural Heritage Conservation Science Center at NRICH
May. 2011 Establishment of Overseas Korean Cultural Heritage Division of Heritage Promotion Bureau.
Sep. 2012 Establishment of Joseon Royal Tombs Management Office.
Mar. 2013 Removal of Historic Cities Conservation Division and Overseas Korean Cultural Heritage Division.
Oct. 2013 Establishment of National Intangible Heritage Center with Planning Management Division.
Mar. 2014 Establishment of Historic Cities Conservation & Promotion Division and Promotion of Planning Management Division at National Intangible Heritage Center.
