These socks are part of suui (garments for the dead), which were excavated from the tomb of Hong Geuk-ga (?~1670), the 14th generation of the Burim Hong¡¯s family, who was a Confucian scholar.
This relic was discovered when Hong¡¯s tomb was removed due to the construction project of Andong Dam in 1974.
Made of cotton, both of the socks have the seam of the topside of the foot, which is straight and makes a turn with an angle at some part.
They are 24.5cm long, slightly shorter than today¡¯s beoseon (traditional Korean socks).
¡Ø The name of this cultural property was changed from Andonghongssisuui to Honggeukgamyochultoboksik on Feb.
